The British Farmland Bird of Prey Initiative leads the way in raptor conservation, supporting landowners across England to boost bird biodiversity through expert nest box, installations, surveys and habitat guidance.
Who we are

NIGEL MIDDLETON
After 18 years working in the agricultural sector in Norfolk, Nigel followed his passion and has been giving advice to farmers and landowners with reference to habitat management and nest box placement for Barn Owls, Kestrels and other birds for more than 40 years. He has also worked with the Broads Authority on nest box schemes in conjunction with Natural England. He often gives talks and presentations to local groups, schools and colleges and was involved in highlighting Raptor Persecution through the local press as well as television and radio. He has also worked with the local police Wildlife Crime Officers on Raptor related cases. He had a regular slot on BBC Radio Norfolk responding to listeners’ enquiries regarding wildlife. Nigel is experienced with practical solutions to conservation that work for both landowners and birds of prey.

TWIGGY BIGWOOD
A farmworkers daughter, following a career in television sound, Twiggy has worked extensively in Norfolk in senior administration roles, from music publishing to Norwich Cathedral. She often writes on conservation and the joy of being out on the land in Norfolk and uses technology to bring nature to those who cannot get outdoors, using video, drones and photography. A keen advocate of a fair deal for farmers, she believes that by using positive ecological methods you can bring a change in the perception much of the general public has for the farming community and bring huge benefits to wildlife.
Our Areas of Expertise
A Landowner Partnership
The British Farmland Bird of Prey Initiative offers a complete service to landowners from advising on box or basket placement, building the boxes or baskets in our own workshop and installing them. You can then either monitor the box yourself – vital if you are claiming a Rural Payment grant – or we can do this for you. We will visit the box twice a year to monitor and maintain the box and send our findings to the relevant authorities, and will also send you a fully illustrated report for your records.
