Built from FSC® Certified plywood, all our boxes are designed for maximum uptake – but with minimum impact on the landscape.

With years of experience, Nigel Middleton has created sustainable nest boxes that melt into the landscape. Hard to spot – but perfect for birds.
Raptor boxes are treated with Protek Timber Eco Shield, a water-based, microporous acrylic coating that stains and protects with Low V.O.C. It’s deep green colour was chosen for maximum camouflage.
Swift boxes use light-reflecting paint to keep the box cool during hot summer days. They can also be supplied covered with fascia board to blend into the eaves.
The Build
All BFBI nest boxes are constructed from 12mm and 18mm STREtek muti-laminated plywood FSC® Certified using EN314-2 Class 3 Glue. All fittings screws, hinges and barrel bolts are made from N304 stainless steel. Fitting of the large boxes for owls etc. are fixed to trees using nylon threaded rod to DIN 976-1 and nylon flange-nut hex non-serrated, to DIN 6923. Small bird boxes are fitted to trees using aluminium nails (ASIN B00H7XUKQ2). Both these fittings are used to avoid any damage or injury in the likelihood that the tree must be removed by tree surgeons using chainsaws.
All boxes are treated with Protek Timber Eco Shield, a water-based, microporous acrylic coating that stains and protects with Low V.O.C. These wood treatments are used to prolong the longevity of the boxes, allowing for minimal follow up maintenance and disturbance of the birds.

Statement from our timber supplier:
“Timber is the world’s only self-rejuvenating, renewable resource. It is unique amongst conventional construction materials in that during its growth, harvesting and replanting life cycle it is the only one, when properly managed, that adds to natural capital. All other conventional building materials ultimately deplete the earth’s finite natural resources.
Timber and forest products are the only natural resource to have comprehensive internationally
recognised Chain of Custody schemes which are robust, independently audited and uninterrupted from forest to final end-use. The schemes demonstrate the indisputable sustainability of wood and wood products as the world’s most environmentally friendly raw material.
Falcon Timber Ltd supports independent third-party audited Chain of Custody certification of forestry and forest products and recognises this as the best way of demonstrating good environmental management. We hold PEFC and FSC® (FSC-C016787) Chain of Custody certificates and are members of PEFC UK. The vast majority of panel products imported and distributed by Falcon Timber Ltd is certified under one or other of these environmental management schemes.
With regard to the procurement of panel products, we regularly visit our primary producers and principal suppliers to verify that the best environmental forestry management is being practiced. We believe we hold a duty to ensure the preservation of our global forest resource for the benefit of this and future generations. We are in a good position to assure our customers that the forest products they buy from Falcon Timber come with the highest environmental pedigree.”
